Stand-in photo: roof repair in Fort Worth (replace with Salter job photo)

A roof leak in Fort Worth rarely stays small. A lifted shingle in April becomes a stained ceiling by July, after a few heavy storms and weeks of attic heat. This guide covers the repairs we make most often, how we decide between repair and replacement, and how insurance fits in when a storm caused the damage.

Leaking right now, even at night? Our emergency roof repair page covers what to do first and how to reach Aaron any time.

What are the most common roof repairs in Fort Worth?

The most common repairs we make are leaks at flashing, cracked pipe boots, wind-lifted or missing shingles, and worn valleys. These four account for most of the calls we get across Fort Worth.

  • Flashing: the metal around chimneys, walls and skylights. Older homes near downtown and on the Near Southside often have brittle or patched flashing around brick chimneys.
  • Pipe boots: the rubber collars around plumbing vents dry out and crack in Texas sun, often well before the shingles wear out.
  • Lifted or missing shingles: spring wind can break the seal strip, and once a shingle lifts, rain gets under it.
  • Valleys: where two slopes meet, water and debris concentrate. Leaves from big trees make this worse.

Most of these are true essential roof repairs: a targeted fix, not a new roof.

How do I know if my roof leak needs repair or replacement?

If the damage is limited to one area and the rest of the roof is sound, a repair usually makes sense. If shingles are brittle, curling or storm-damaged across several slopes, replacement is usually the better investment.

On every inspection we look at the age and condition of the whole roof, not just the leak. Questions we ask: Are the shingles still flexible? Is granule loss spread across the roof? Is the decking soft in more than one place? Is this the third leak in two years? If the answers point to a tired roof, patching keeps costing money. If not, a repair can buy years. For more on timing, see our repair vs. replacement timeline and the signs it's time to replace your roof.

Does insurance pay for roof repair in Fort Worth?

Insurance generally covers sudden damage from storms, like hail and wind, and generally does not cover wear, age or poor maintenance. Whether your repair is covered depends on your policy and on what caused the damage.

A leak from a shingle that blew off in a storm may be part of a claim. A leak from a pipe boot that cracked from age usually is not. Policies also differ: some pay replacement cost value (RCV), some actual cash value (ACV), and many Texas policies have a separate wind and hail deductible. We'll tell you honestly whether what we see looks like storm damage or wear. Your insurer makes the coverage decision.

How do I file a claim for hail or wind damage on my roof?

Report the damage to your insurer promptly, take dated photos, and keep a record of the claim number and every conversation. Check your policy for its deadline to report storm damage.

  1. Make sure everyone is safe, and stay off a wet or damaged roof.
  2. Photograph damage from the ground: dented gutters, vents and AC fins, shingles in the yard, and any interior stains. Note the storm date.
  3. If water is coming in, protect the house. We offer emergency tarp installation.
  4. Call your insurer or use their app to open a claim, and write down the claim number.
  5. Schedule a free inspection so you have a contractor's photo report before the adjuster visits.

We can be on the roof when the adjuster inspects, show the damage we documented and share our estimate. Under TDI Bulletin B-0008-24, contractors can discuss estimates and technical details with an adjuster but may not act as your adjuster, so the claim decision stays between you and your insurer. Our Texas roof insurance claim guide goes deeper into the process.

Can you match my existing shingles?

Often, yes, but not always. Many 1990s and 2000s tract homes across Fort Worth used shingle lines that have since been discontinued.

We look for an exact or close match first. When a repair can't be matched, the patch may stand out, and on a storm claim that can become part of the conversation with your insurer about how much of the roof should be replaced. Insurers handle matching differently, so we document it clearly and let you discuss it with your adjuster.

Do I need a permit for a roof repair in Fort Worth?

Usually not for shingle work. A permit is required when the repair replaces decking or structural parts of the roof.

Under the City of Fort Worth residential permitting page, replacing roof decking, sheathing, rafters or ridge boards requires a building permit, while shingle-only work does not (the city does limit how many shingle layers are allowed). If we find rotted decking during a repair, we'll tell you before we go further, and as a registered contractor we handle the permit when one is needed. Homes in other cities, like Saginaw or Keller, follow their own city's rules.

What shapes the project total for a roof repair?

The project total depends on what's damaged, how steep and high the roof is, how easy it is to reach, and whether decking or flashing has to be replaced.

A single pipe boot on a one-story ranch is a small job. Chimney flashing on a steep two-story roof takes more time, safety equipment and materials. Hidden damage, like soft decking under a leak, also changes the scope. That's why we give you a detailed estimate for your property after we've seen the roof, with photos, before any work starts. If a repair is the budget-friendly option, we'll say so.

Can I make a temporary roof repair myself?

From inside, yes: catch the water, move belongings and poke a small hole in a bulging ceiling stain to drain it. Please don't climb onto a wet or storm-damaged roof.

If water is actively coming in, a professional tarp is the safest stopgap. It protects the decking and insulation until a permanent repair is made, and on a storm claim, reasonable steps to prevent further damage are generally expected by insurers. Keep receipts and photos of anything you do. Then schedule a free inspection so the permanent fix addresses the cause, not just the stain.

What happens at a free roof inspection?

We check every slope, the flashing, vents, gutters and attic where we can, then send you photos and a detailed estimate for your property.

You'll see exactly what we saw and what we recommend: essential roof repairs, items to watch, or replacement. Our free roof inspection guide explains the inspection step by step. When you're ready, let's get your project scheduled. You can call or text 972-246-7448 or request a free inspection.

Frequently asked questions

Will my insurer pay for a roof leak?

Usually only when sudden damage, like hail or wind, caused the leak. Leaks from age or wear generally aren't covered. Your policy and your insurer decide.

Can you match my shingles on an older Fort Worth home?

Often, yes. If your shingle line has been discontinued, we look for the closest match and document it so you can discuss options with your insurer.

Do I need a permit for a roof repair in Fort Worth?

Not for shingle-only work. Replacing decking or structural roof parts requires a City of Fort Worth building permit, and we handle it.

Is your roof inspection free?

Yes. We inspect the roof for free and send photos with a detailed estimate for your property.
