Fort Worth has a hail history all its own
Few cities know hail like Fort Worth. The May 5, 1995 Mayfest storm dropped hail up to softball size on the festival grounds by the Trinity River and caused an estimated $2 billion in damage across Tarrant and Dallas counties, according to the National Weather Service. On March 17, 2016, tennis-ball hail hit west Fort Worth before sunrise. NWS reports noted heavy damage along west Camp Bowie Boulevard, and Tarrant County losses were put at about $600 million. More recently, NOAA storm reports logged hail up to 3 inches in southwest Fort Worth on March 16, 2023, and apple-size hail in far south Fort Worth on June 1, 2025.
Wind matters here too. The March 28, 2000 tornado ran down West Seventh Street into downtown, damaging older homes in the Linwood neighborhood and breaking thousands of downtown windows.
One city, very different roofs
- Historic districts: Fairmount, Ryan Place, Mistletoe Heights and Arlington Heights have 1910s to 1930s homes with steep pitches, dormers, original wood decking and, in some cases, historic-district review. We take our time on these.
- Mid-century west and southwest: Ridglea, Westcliff, Wedgwood and Tanglewood are mostly brick ranches from the 1950s to 1970s with low-slope sections and mature trees over the roof.
- Newer north Fort Worth: neighborhoods around Alliance and Heritage are 2000s and newer, with larger roofs, many valleys and builder-grade shingles that are often near the end of their first life after a few hail seasons.
Why homeowners choose Salter Exteriors: serving North Texas since 2014, more than 2,500 insurance claims handled, BBB A+, 4.9 stars on Google from 54 reviews, free inspections and a 5-year labor warranty that transfers if you sell within those 5 years.
