The 5-inch hailstone
On June 12, 2023, broadcast media shared a photo of a 5-inch hailstone in Mansfield, according to NWS storm reports. That same day a 4-inch stone was reported in nearby Burleson. Mansfield has also had tornadoes: on January 15, 2017, the NWS confirmed brief EF0 tornadoes in the Mansfield area along with 1-inch hail.
A city that spans three counties
Mansfield reaches into Tarrant, Johnson and Ellis counties, and its housing ranges from older homes around Historic Downtown Mansfield on Main Street to large newer subdivisions built since the 2000s. The newer homes often have big, complex roofs with builder-grade shingles. Hail that size can crack shingles, puncture vents and split gutters.
