Storm and hail history in Watauga
NOAA's Storm Events Database (which includes Storm Prediction Center reports) records these events in or right next to Watauga:
- March 24, 2019: half-dollar (1.25-inch) hail measured a few miles north of the NWS Fort Worth office.
- April 28, 2020: ping-pong-ball (1.5-inch) hail at the NWS Fort Worth office, just west-southwest of Watauga.
- March 2, 2023: a measured 70 mph gust at the NWS Fort Worth office, with metal roofing peeled off buildings near Watauga.
Hail damage isn't always visible from the ground. Bruised shingles, cracked vents and dented gutters can leak months later. That's why we photograph every slope.
Watauga homes and what they need
Watauga is mostly 1980s single-family homes. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020–2024) puts the median year built at 1984 and the median owner-occupied home value at $250,500, and about 78% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Many of those roofs are on their second or third shingle install. The common problems we see are worn pipe boots, tired flashing, sagging gutters and fascia boards that have soaked up years of water.
