Insurance claims are confusing, and the first one most homeowners file is after a hailstorm. We have helped with more than 2,500 insurance claims across North Texas since 2014. Here is how it works, in plain terms. — Aaron

How does a roof insurance claim work in Texas?

Inspection, claim, adjuster visit, approved estimate, then the work.

  1. Free inspection. We check the roof and photograph any storm damage, so you know whether a claim makes sense.
  2. You file the claim with your insurer or agent, with the date of the storm.
  3. Adjuster visit. We can meet the adjuster on the roof and point out the damage we documented.
  4. Review the estimate. We go through the insurer's estimate with you line by line and flag anything that was missed.
  5. Do the work. A roof repair or roof replacement. You pay your deductible as your policy requires.

What we do and what we don't do

  • We document damage with dated photos and measurements.
  • We meet your adjuster and walk the roof with them.
  • We explain the estimate and supplements in plain English.
  • We do not waive or pay deductibles. Texas Insurance Code §707.002 requires you to pay it, and Business & Commerce Code §27.02 bars contractors from waiving it (see TDI).
  • We do not act as your public adjuster or negotiate your policy for you.

What should I do right after a storm?

Take photos of anything damaged, keep receipts for any emergency work, and stop active leaks. Most policies expect you to prevent further damage. We can tarp an opened roof; emergency tarp service starts at a $250 minimum. Then book a free roof inspection.

Can a roofer file my insurance claim for me?

You or your agent file the claim with your insurance company, because the policy is yours. We help by documenting the damage with dated photos, meeting your adjuster, and explaining the insurer's estimate.

Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first?

Getting a free inspection first tells you whether there is real damage before you open a claim. If there is, we give you photos to send with your claim.

Do I have to pay my deductible?

Yes. Texas Insurance Code Section 707.002 (HB 2102, effective September 1, 2019) requires you to pay your deductible, and Business and Commerce Code Section 27.02 makes it an offense for a contractor to waive, absorb or rebate it. Be wary of anyone who offers to.

What if the adjuster misses damage?

We review the insurer's estimate with you. If it leaves out damage we documented, we can provide photos and details so you can ask the insurer to take another look.

How long does a roof insurance claim take?

It varies by insurer and by how busy adjusters are after a big storm. Many claims move from inspection to approval in a few weeks; some take longer.

Will my insurance pay for the whole roof?

If covered storm damage is widespread, many policies pay to replace the roof minus your deductible. Policies differ, especially on older roofs, so read your coverage or ask your agent.
