What does hail damage look like on a roof?

Hail leaves bruised or cracked shingles, missing granules and dents in metal. Most of it is not visible from the ground.

  • Soft spots or bruises in asphalt shingles that feel like a bruised apple
  • Dark circles where the granules were knocked off, exposing the mat
  • Cracked or split shingles, and cracked ridge caps
  • Dents in gutters, downspouts, roof vents, flashing and AC fins
  • Piles of granules at downspout outlets after the storm

For a homeowner checklist, read our guide to signs of hail damage on a Fort Worth roof and how to document hail damage.

How we handle hail damage, step by step

  1. Free inspection. We walk every slope, chalk-mark hail hits in test squares, and photograph the damage along with gutters, vents and soft metals.
  2. Honest answer. If there is no real damage, we tell you. If there is, we explain whether repair or replacement makes sense.
  3. Claim help. We give you dated photos and can meet your adjuster on the roof. See insurance claim help.
  4. Stop leaks now. If hail or wind opened the roof, we can tarp it. Emergency tarp service starts at a $250 minimum.
  5. Repair or replace. Small, isolated damage gets a roof repair. Widespread damage usually means a roof replacement.

Is hail damage repairable, or do I need a new roof?

It depends on how widespread the damage is and how old the roof is. A few cracked shingles from one storm can often be replaced. When bruising runs across whole slopes, patching leaves a roof that will keep failing, and replacement is the better fix. Older shingles also get brittle, so matching and sealing repairs on them is harder.

Should I upgrade to impact-resistant shingles?

If you are replacing a hail-damaged roof anyway, it is worth pricing Class 4 impact-resistant shingles. The Texas Department of Insurance says impact-resistant roofing can qualify for a premium discount, with Class 4 earning the highest credit, but each insurer sets its own amount. Ask yours, and we will quote both options.

How do I know if hail damaged my roof?

From the ground you may see dented gutters, downspouts, AC fins or window screens, and granules piling up at downspout outlets. On the roof, hail leaves soft bruises, dark spots where granules were knocked off, and cracked or split shingles. Many hits are not visible from the yard, so a free inspection with photos is the reliable way to know.

What size hail damages a roof?

Hail about 1 inch (quarter size) and larger can damage standard asphalt shingles, and older or brittle shingles can be hurt by smaller stones. Wind-driven hail does more damage than hail falling straight down.

Does hail damage more than the roof?

Often. The same storm can dent gutters, downspouts and AC fins, crack window screens and chip siding and exterior paint. We note everything we see during the inspection so nothing is left off your claim.

Will a hail claim raise my insurance rate?

Weather claims are handled differently from at-fault claims, but every insurer has its own rules. Ask your agent before filing if you are worried. We can inspect first so you know whether there is damage worth claiming.

Do you repair hail damage or only replace roofs?

Both. Light, isolated damage can be repaired. When hail has bruised shingles across a whole slope or the whole roof, replacement is usually the right fix and is often what the insurance company approves.

Do you meet the insurance adjuster?

Yes. We can be on the roof with your adjuster to point out the damage we documented, and we have helped with more than 2,500 insurance claims since 2014.
