Why hail damage is easy to miss
Hail rarely punches holes in a roof. More often it bruises shingles, knocks off the protective granules, and cracks the mat underneath. From the ground, the roof can look fine for months until the exposed spots start to break down in the sun and leak. That's why North Texas homeowners are often surprised to learn they have a valid claim long after a storm passed through.
What to check from the ground
Start with the soft metals around your home. Look for dents on gutters, downspouts, roof vents, and the fins of your AC condenser. Check window screens for tears and painted surfaces for chips on the side that faced the storm. Look in your gutters and at the bottom of downspouts for piles of granules that look like coarse sand. Check your ceilings and attic for new stains. If you find dents on metal, there's a good chance the roof was hit too. Please don't climb on the roof yourself after a storm. Wet, damaged shingles are slippery and dangerous.
What a professional inspection includes
When we inspect a roof after hail, we check every slope, mark hits, and photograph them. We look for bruising, cracks, and granule loss on shingles, and we check flashing, pipe boots, ridge caps, and skylights. You get a professional report with detailed photos and honest recommendations. If the damage only needs essential roof repairs, we'll tell you. If it's enough to justify a claim, we'll explain the next steps.
Timing matters
Most Texas homeowner policies have deadlines for reporting storm damage, so check your policy and don't wait too long after a storm. Getting an inspection soon also means small problems don't become leaks that damage insulation, drywall, and belongings.
